What Mic Gain Should I Use? Setting Levels Without Guessing
Gain is the control people reach for when a recording sounds wrong, and it is usually the wrong control. Understanding what it actually does, and what it cannot fix, is the difference between a clean recording and a noisy one.
Short answer: Aim for peaks around -12 to -6 dBFS, with average speech sitting near -18 dBFS. Never let peaks touch 0 dBFS. And before you touch gain at all, get your microphone distance right.
Gain Is Not Volume
This distinction matters more than any number in this article.
Gain sets how much the preamp amplifies the microphone's signal on the way in. It determines what gets recorded.
Volume controls how loudly you hear something on the way out. It changes nothing about the recording.
Get gain wrong and the damage is baked into the file. You can lower a too-loud recording later, but you cannot recover a clipped one, and raising a too-quiet one brings the noise floor up with it.
The Numbers to Aim For
Digital audio is measured in dBFS: decibels relative to full scale, where 0 dBFS is the absolute ceiling. Everything sits below it as a negative number.

The practical instruction: set gain so your loudest moments peak between -12 and -6 dBFS. Your ordinary speaking level will naturally land around -18 dBFS, which is exactly where you want it.
That gap between -6 and 0 is deliberate. It is headroom for the unexpected, a laugh, a raised voice, a door slam.
Why Both Extremes Hurt
Too much gain
The signal clips. The waveform's peaks get squared off, producing harsh distortion that no software can undo. Unlike analogue overdrive, digital clipping is simply broken audio.
Too little gain
This is the subtler failure, and more common among people who have been warned about clipping.
Every preamp generates a small amount of its own noise. Record too quietly and your voice sits close to that noise floor. When you raise the level afterwards, you raise the hiss by exactly the same amount. The recording is permanently noisier than it needed to be.
This is why low-output microphones need good preamps. Some well-known dynamic broadcast microphones produce very little output and need a lot of clean gain. The Correct Order of Operations

- Fix the room. Switch off fans and air conditioning. Close windows. Deal with anything that hums.

- Put on headphones. Never set levels through speakers.
- Turn gain all the way down.
- Speak at the volume you will actually use, not a test voice, your real one.
- Raise gain slowly while watching the meter.

- Now do your loudest realistic thing, laugh, raise your voice, get excited.
- If that touched 0 dBFS, back the gain off a few dB and retest.

Where Gain Lives
On a USB microphone, gain is usually a knob on the body, or a slider in your operating system's sound settings.
