    How Far Should Your Microphone Be From Your Mouth?

    Most people set their microphone too far away. It feels natural to sit back and talk normally, but that single choice is responsible for more thin, echoey, amateur-sounding recordings than any equipment shortcoming.

    Short answer: For a dynamic broadcast microphone, 2–4 inches (5–10 cm). For a condenser recording vocals, 6–12 inches (15–30 cm). For a lavalier, 6–8 inches below the chin. If your recordings sound distant or roomy, you are almost certainly too far away.

    Why Distance Matters So Much

    There is a physical rule underneath all of this: the inverse square law. Every time you double your distance from a sound source, the level drops by roughly 6 dB.

    That sounds abstract until you apply it to a real problem. Your voice and the room noise are two separate sources. Move closer to the microphone and your voice gets dramatically louder, while the air conditioning across the room does not change at all.

    Halving your distance is effectively a 6 dB improvement in the ratio of your voice to everything else in the room. No microphone upgrade gives you that for free.


    Distance by Microphone Type

    Dynamic broadcast microphones: 2–4 inches

    Dynamic microphones are less sensitive by design, so they expect to be worked close. This is why radio presenters sit almost on top of them. At 2–4 inches you get a full, present voice and the room effectively disappears.

    If you own a dynamic microphone and your recordings sound thin, distance is the first thing to check. These microphones do not reward politeness.

    Large-diaphragm condensers: 6–12 inches

    Condensers are far more sensitive and capture more detail, so they do not need to be as close, and getting too close causes problems with plosives and excessive bass. Six to twelve inches is the usual working range for spoken word and sung vocals.

    The catch is that a condenser at 10 inches in an untreated room will capture that room faithfully. If yours sounds echoey, the answer is either treatment or a dynamic microphone. That trade-off is covered in Condenser vs Dynamic Microphones.

    Lavalier microphones: 6–8 inches below the chin

    Clip a lavalier on the chest, roughly a hand's width below the chin, centred. Too low and the voice loses intelligibility; too high and you risk clothing rustle and breath noise.

    Handheld vocal microphones: 1–2 inches, or touching

    Live vocalists work these extremely close, often with lips against the grille. That is deliberate: maximum voice, minimum stage bleed and feedback.


    The Proximity Effect

    Here is the thing nobody warns beginners about. Directional microphones, anything cardioid, supercardioid or figure-8, boost low frequencies as you get closer. This is called the proximity effect.

    Moved in close, your voice gains warmth and body. Moved in too close, it becomes boomy and muddy, and consonants start to distort.

    You can use this deliberately:

    • Want a warmer, more intimate voice? Move in an inch.
    • Sounding boomy or muddy? Back off an inch, or engage the high-pass filter if the microphone has one.
    • Omnidirectional microphones exhibit almost no proximity effect, which is one reason lavaliers sound consistent even as the wearer moves.

    Worth knowing: Many microphones include a high-pass or low-cut switch specifically to counteract the proximity effect when close-miking. If yours has one and you work close, try engaging it.


    Off-Axis Positioning

    Pointing the microphone directly at your mouth is not always the best choice. Straight-on placement catches the full force of plosives, the bursts of air on "p" and "b" sounds.

    Two standard fixes:

    1. Angle the microphone slightly off-axis, roughly 15–30 degrees, so air passes across the capsule rather than into it.
    2. Position it slightly above or below the mouth, aimed back toward it. Above tends to sound slightly brighter, below slightly fuller.

    Combine either with a pop filter and plosives largely stop being a problem.


    A Practical Way to Find Your Distance

    You do not need measuring equipment. Do this once and you will know your position permanently.

    1. Set your microphone at roughly the recommended distance for its type.
    2. Record thirty seconds of normal speech, including some words with hard "p" sounds.
    3. Move two inches closer and record the same thing.
    4. Move four inches further than your original position and record again.
    5. Listen to all three on headphones, not speakers.

    Pick the one where your voice sounds full without booming, and where you can hear the least room behind it. Then mark the position so you can return to it.

    The Mistake Almost Everyone Makes

    Setting the microphone at a comfortable conversational distance (a foot and a half, maybe two feet) and then raising the gain to compensate.

    That does not work, and the reason is important. Raising gain amplifies your voice and the room and the preamp noise equally. The ratio between them never improves. Moving closer changes the ratio itself, which is the only thing that actually matters.
