USB or XLR Microphone: Do You Need an Audio Interface?
The USB versus XLR debate is usually framed as cheap versus professional. That framing is wrong and it leads people to buy the wrong thing. The connector on the end of a microphone says almost nothing about how good it sounds. What it determines is what other equipment you need to make it work.
Short answer: Choose USB if you record alone into a computer and want nothing else to buy. Choose XLR if you need two or more microphones, want to pick your own preamp, or will ever connect to a mixer, camera or PA. Connection type does not determine sound quality.

The Actual Difference
A microphone produces a very small analogue signal. Before a computer can record it, two things must happen: the signal needs amplifying by a preamplifier, and it needs converting from analogue to digital.
A USB microphone does both of those jobs inside its own body. The preamp and the analogue-to-digital converter are built in, so it plugs straight into a computer and appears as an audio device.
An XLR microphone does neither. It outputs the raw analogue signal over a balanced three-pin cable, and something else, an audio interface or a mixer, has to provide the preamp and the conversion.
That is the whole difference. Everything else follows from it.
What USB Gives You
One cable, no decisions
Plug it in and it works. No interface to buy, no phantom power switch to find, no gain staging across two devices. For someone who wants to record a podcast this week rather than learn signal flow first, this matters more than any specification.
Direct monitoring
Most decent USB microphones include a headphone socket. That output is fed from inside the microphone, before the signal travels to the computer and back, so you hear yourself with effectively no delay. Monitoring through the computer instead introduces round-trip latency, which is distracting when you are speaking or singing.
Lower total cost
A capable USB microphone is a complete recording chain. An equivalent XLR microphone still needs an interface, which adds meaningfully to the total.
Where USB Runs Out
You are stuck with the built-in electronics
The preamp and converter are fixed. If they are mediocre, your only upgrade is a different microphone.
One input, usually
Recording two people properly means two separate channels. Most USB microphones give you one. Running two USB microphones into one computer is possible but awkward, and on some systems it needs an aggregate device before it works at all.
It does not fit into larger systems
USB microphones cannot plug into a mixer, a field recorder, or a live PA. If you ever need to work alongside other equipment, a USB microphone is a dead end.
What XLR Gives You
Balanced connection
An XLR cable carries the signal on two conductors in opposite polarity. Interference picked up along the run appears identically on both, and the receiving end cancels it. This is why XLR works reliably over long distances while unbalanced connections pick up hum and buzz.
Every part is replaceable
Microphone, cable, preamp and interface are separate purchases. A better interface improves every microphone you own. A better microphone benefits from the interface you already have. Nothing is welded to anything else.
Multiple inputs
A two-input interface records two people on separate tracks, so you can fix one person's level without touching the other. For interviews and co-hosted shows this is the single biggest practical advantage.
It lasts
Industry-standard XLR microphones stay useful for decades because the connector and the signal standard have not changed. Computers and the connectors around them will change several times over.

More equipment
You need an interface before you can record anything. That is another box, another cable, another power consideration.
Phantom power to understand
Condenser microphones need 48V phantom power supplied by the interface, usually a button marked 48V or P48. Dynamic microphones do not need it and are not harmed by it. A condenser producing silence is very often just an un-pressed phantom power button.
Gain staging to learn
You set the level on the interface, not the microphone. Too low and you raise the noise floor later; too high and you clip. It is not difficult, but it is a thing you now have to know.
Microphones That Do Both
Several models offer USB and XLR on the same body. You start on USB with nothing else to buy, and move to XLR later without replacing the microphone. If you genuinely cannot decide, this is the honest answer rather than a compromise, you are buying the decision, not avoiding it.
Choosing
Choose USB if you record alone, into a computer, and want the fewest moving parts. Podcasting solo, streaming, gaming, voice calls and voiceover all fit comfortably.
Choose XLR if you need more than one microphone, expect the setup to grow, want to choose your preamp, or will ever connect to a mixer, camera or PA system.
Choose a dual-output model if you want USB simplicity now and XLR flexibility later.
What should not drive the decision is the belief that XLR sounds better. A good USB microphone in a treated room beats an expensive XLR microphone in a noisy one, every time. Room acoustics and microphone placement affect your recording far more than the connector.
A Note on Microphone Type
Connection and microphone type are separate choices that people often conflate. USB microphones are usually condensers, but USB dynamic microphones exist.
