Do I Need Phantom Power? A Straight Answer
A condenser microphone producing complete silence is one of the most common problems in home recording, and the cause is almost always the same: an un-pressed phantom power button.
Short answer: Condenser microphones need phantom power. Dynamic microphones do not, and are not harmed by it. USB microphones never need it. Passive ribbon microphones can be damaged by it, so check before switching it on.
What Phantom Power Actually Is
Phantom power is DC voltage, almost always 48 volts: sent from your audio interface or mixer up the same XLR cable that carries the audio signal back down. Hence "phantom": it travels invisibly alongside the audio without needing a separate power lead.
It exists because condenser microphones contain active electronics that need powering. There is nowhere to plug a power supply into a microphone, so the voltage arrives through the cable already connected.
On your interface it will be labelled 48V, P48, or simply Phantom.

Condensers: yes, always
Every XLR condenser microphone needs phantom power. Large-diaphragm studio microphones, small-diaphragm instrument microphones, shotgun microphones for video, all of them. Without it you get nothing, not a quiet signal but genuine silence.
Dynamics: no, and it does not matter
Dynamic microphones generate their own signal from a coil moving in a magnetic field. No electronics, no power needed.
Importantly, leaving phantom power switched on will not harm a dynamic microphone. Because XLR is a balanced connection, the voltage appears equally on both signal conductors and the microphone's coil simply ignores it. If you run a mixed setup, you can leave 48V engaged on all channels without worrying.
Ribbons: check first
This is the one case where phantom power can genuinely cause harm.
Passive ribbon microphones contain an extremely thin, delicate metal ribbon. On some older designs, or with a faulty cable, or if a cable is plugged in while phantom power is already live, the voltage surge can stretch or destroy that ribbon. Repairs are expensive.
Active ribbon microphones contain a built-in preamp and genuinely require phantom power to work.
The two look almost identical. If you own a ribbon microphone, read the manual before touching that button.
Habit worth forming: Always switch phantom power off before plugging or unplugging any microphone, and give it a moment to discharge. It costs you two seconds and eliminates the main risk entirely.
Why Your Condenser Is Silent: A Checklist
Work through these in order.
- Is phantom power actually on? Find the 48V button. Many interfaces switch it per-channel or per-pair, so enabling it for channel 1 may do nothing for channel 2.
- Is the gain up? Phantom power is not gain. You still need to raise the input level.
- Is it a proper XLR cable? Phantom power only travels over XLR. A cable with a TS jack on either end will not carry it.
- Is the cable good? A broken conductor can pass some audio but block the voltage. Try another cable.
- Is the pad engaged? A -20 dB pad switch on the microphone or interface will make a quiet source almost inaudible.
- Is the microphone actually a condenser? If it is a low-output dynamic, the problem is preamp gain, not power.
That sequence resolves the overwhelming majority of cases.
Phantom Power Is Not the Same as Plug-In Power
These get confused constantly, and they are not interchangeable.

Plugging a 3.5mm lavalier into an XLR input with an adapter will not work properly, and a phantom-powered condenser will never run off a phone's headphone jack. Match the microphone to the connection it was designed for.
Do You Need an Interface At All?
If phantom power sounds like more complexity than you want, you may not need it.
Choose USB if you record alone into a computer and want no extra hardware. USB microphones handle their own power, preamp and conversion internally.
Choose XLR plus an interface if you need multiple microphones, want to choose your preamp, or expect the setup to grow.
