Why Your Mic Picks Up Keyboard and Fan Noise (Fix It in Order)
"Why does my mic pick up everything?" is usually answered with "buy a noise gate". That is the last step, not the first, and reaching for it early means living with a problem you could have removed entirely.
Short answer: Your mic is too far away and your gain is too high. Move to 2–4 inches on a dynamic mic, drop the gain, and put something soft behind you. Software noise reduction should be the last thing you add, not the first.
Your Microphone Is Not Broken
A microphone converts air pressure changes into a signal. It has no concept of which sounds you wanted. If your keyboard is making noise in the same room, it is a legitimate sound and the microphone captures it.
The question is never "how do I make the mic ignore things". It is "how do I make my voice enormous relative to everything else".
That reframing tells you what actually works.
The Real Cause: A Ratio Problem
Two sources compete at your microphone: your voice, and everything else. What matters is the gap between them.
Sitting 18 inches away with high gain, your voice arrives moderately loud and so does the room. Small gap. Everything is audible.
Sitting 3 inches away with low gain, your voice arrives enormously loud while the room is unchanged. Large gap. The room effectively disappears.
Raising gain does not help, because it amplifies both sides of the ratio equally. This is the single most important thing to understand, and the reason most fixes people try fail.
Fix It In This Order
Work top to bottom. Stop when the problem is solved, most people never need to reach step 6.
1. Remove the noise source
Obvious, free, and frequently skipped. Switch off fans, air conditioning, air purifiers. Close the window. Move the PC tower further from the mic, or onto carpet rather than a hard floor. Shut the door.
A noise that no longer exists needs no technical solution.
2. Get much closer to the microphone
The largest single improvement available to you, and it costs nothing.

3. Lower your gain
Once you are closer, you need less amplification. Lower gain means less preamp hiss and less of the room.

4. Point the microphone's dead zone at the noise
A cardioid microphone rejects sound from directly behind it. That rejection is real and useful, but only if you aim it deliberately.
Identify your loudest noise source, then position the microphone so its back faces that source while its front faces you. If your PC sits to your right, your mic's rear should point right.

5. Put something soft behind you
Hard surfaces reflect your voice back into the microphone a few milliseconds late, which is what "echoey" and "roomy" actually mean.
The highest-value target is the wall behind you, because that is where your voice goes before bouncing straight back at the mic.
- Hang a thick duvet, moving blanket or heavy curtain on that wall
- Do not record in a corner, corners reinforce reflections
- A bookshelf full of uneven books works genuinely well
- Soft furniture, rugs and curtains all help
Thick and dense beats thin and decorative. A single heavy blanket outperforms a scattering of thin foam tiles.
Skip the foam-first instinct. Thin acoustic foam is the most-purchased and least-effective first move. It absorbs high frequencies only, leaving the low-mid boxiness untouched. A duvet costs nothing and does more.
6. Only now, add software
With the previous five done, you may not need this. If you do:
- A noise gate mutes the signal below a threshold. Good for steady hum between sentences. Set it gently, aggressive gating chops off the starts and ends of words.
- Noise reduction / AI cleanup can remove consistent background noise well. Push it too hard and voices turn watery and artificial.
Software is a finishing tool. It cannot recover a recording made 2 feet from the mic in a bare room at maximum gain.
Matching the Fix to the Noise

When the Microphone Genuinely Is the Problem
Sometimes it is the equipment, specifically, the wrong type of microphone for your room.
Condenser microphones are sensitive by design. In a treated studio that is exactly what you want. In an untreated bedroom, it means capturing the room in full fidelity. A condenser that "picks up everything" is working correctly; it is simply the wrong tool for that space.
Dynamic microphones are less sensitive and naturally reject distant sound. This is precisely why broadcast studios use them, and why they suit ordinary rooms.
