Which Microphone Polar Pattern Do You Actually Need?
A polar pattern is just a map of where a microphone listens. Choosing the wrong one is why some recordings capture the whole room when you only wanted one voice, and why a mic that sounds great for one person sounds hollow for two.
Short answer: One person in an ordinary room? Cardioid. Two people facing each other? Figure-8. A group around a table? Omnidirectional. Loud stage with monitors? Supercardioid. Video where the mic stays out of frame? Shotgun.

Cardioid: The Default, And Usually Correct
Cardioid picks up from the front, partially from the sides, and rejects the rear. Named for the heart shape its pickup diagram makes.
Choose it when: you are recording one person in a room you do not fully control. Podcasting, streaming, gaming, voiceover, single-source instruments.
Why it works: the rear rejection is genuinely useful. Aim the back of the microphone at your noisiest thing. PC, window, air conditioning, and that source drops noticeably.
The catch: cardioid microphones exhibit the proximity effect, boosting bass as you move closer. Useful for warmth, muddy if overdone.

Supercardioid and Hypercardioid: Tighter, With a Catch
These narrow the front pickup further. Better isolation, but they reintroduce a small rear lobe: a pocket of sensitivity directly behind the microphone.
Choose them when: you are on a loud stage, fighting monitor feedback, or need one source isolated from others nearby.
The trap: because of that rear lobe, the old habit of pointing a mic's back at the problem stops working. On stage this means floor monitors must sit off to the sides, not directly behind the microphone.
For a home setup, these are usually unnecessary. Cardioid is more forgiving.
Omnidirectional: Equal In All Directions
Omni picks up everything around it with no rejection at all.
Choose it when:
- Several people are seated around one table sharing a microphone
- You are using a lavalier: nearly all are omni, which is why they stay consistent as the wearer turns their head
- You genuinely want the room as part of the recording
Why it is not the obvious choice for most people: no rejection means the air conditioning, the traffic and every wall reflection arrive at full strength. In an untreated room this is usually the wrong call.
The upside people miss: omni microphones have essentially no proximity effect and handle off-axis sound very naturally. Voices sound consistent even when movement is sloppy.
The 2:1 rule: a cardioid microphone has to sit roughly twice as far from a source as an omni to capture the same amount of room ambience. Put differently, an omni at 6 inches picks up about as much room as a cardioid at 12 inches. Close-miked omnis are far more usable than their reputation suggests.
Figure-8: The Two-Person Solution
Figure-8 (bidirectional) hears the front and rear equally while strongly rejecting both sides.
Choose it when:
- Two people sit facing each other across one microphone, an interview format
- You are recording certain stereo techniques such as Mid-Side or Blumlein
- You want to null out a specific noise source by pointing a side at it
That last point is the most underused trick here. Figure-8's side rejection is deeper than cardioid's rear rejection. If you have one persistent noise source, turning a figure-8 microphone so its side faces it removes more than any other pattern will.
Most ribbon microphones are natively figure-8.
Shotgun: Distance Without the Room
Shotguns use an interference tube to achieve very narrow pickup, letting them reach a source from further away while rejecting the sides.
Choose it when: the microphone must stay out of frame. Film, video, documentary, boom operation.
Not for: desktop podcasting. Shotguns are designed for distance work and colour off-axis sound unpleasantly, so a shotgun on a desk generally sounds worse than a cardioid.
Multi-Pattern Microphones
Some microphones offer switchable patterns. Genuinely useful if your needs vary, a solo episode on cardioid, an in-person interview on figure-8.
Worth being honest about the trade-off: a fixed-cardioid microphone at a given price is usually better at cardioid than a multi-pattern microphone at the same price. Pay for switching only if you will actually use it.

Choosing Without Overthinking It
Pattern matters, but less than two things people address later: how close you are, and whether your microphone type suits your room. A cardioid dynamic at 3 inches in a bare room beats a multi-pattern condenser at 18 inches every time.
Get the type and distance right first. Then pattern is a refinement rather than a rescue.
